and Two if by Sea . . . . .

There was something sinister about the big cat that prowled out of the Maine mists into our snug little harbor at Somesville

It was the "Cats Meow", the biggest catamaran we'd ever seen. 78 ft long, 35 ft wide, and a 6 ft draft. Curiosity and the internet proved us right. The Cat had been drug trafficking for years, and her owner sentenced to 18 years in jail in March of this year! All the details in http://www.justice.gov/usao/gas/pr/2007/53_07Chupurdy.pdf  We met the owners, Don and Levonne, who didn't strike us as drug traffickers, and in fact turned out to be on a different leaf, chartering the boat. For their story and some impressive pictures of the Cat:   http://www.sailtrekker.com/the-catamaran.html

Friday morning opened beautiful, and we left our cozy harbor of Somes Sound for THE RACES on Saturday in Winter Harbor. We sailed (yes, sailed) past the beautiful hills

and the rugged rocky cliffs of Acadia

into Winter Harbor. We dinghy-ed around the inner harbor, where the boys were getting their boats ready for THE RACES!

and the competitors were gathering,

including this harpoon equipped, long nosed tuna hunter

Later that peaceful evening, we were treated to a full moon

complete with its glow worm on the placid waters of Winter Harbor, while we eagerly awaited the lobster boat races of Saturday.  (and for those of you who don't know the Mills Brother's 1952 song "Glow Worm", check it out on YouTube  and you, too, can have it on your mind for days!  Try http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8myK93FqbYc  for a live 1957 performance on the Nat King Cole Show)
