First, our best wishes for a happy, healthy, and safe New Year! May this be a wonderful year for everyone.
New Year's Eve in Bimini - a little quiet, as most shops closed early. Up and at 'em, we left early to get to the BATELCO office. Our little emergency Bahamian phone didn't see to want to work. It turns out that we hadn't added money to it recently enough, and therefore had to buy a new SIM card. That wasn't a problem, but it did change our phone number. That, in turn, closed our old voice mail system. Another hike back to BATELCO to get voice mail set up.
I wanted to do laundry, but the laundromat was overflowing and closing at noon. So much for that. We did walk a bit around town. The very nice Mrs. Saunders in the tailor shop gave us a scrap of jeans so we can mend a hole in Luke's newest jeans.
Luke spent some quality cruiser time...that means going over weather with other cruisers. Weather is the most important thing in cruising down here and everyone spends a lot of time on it, each making their own decisions based often on group discussion.
We did spend some of the $.60/gallon water to wash down Latitudes. She was a salty mess from our crossing. Money well spent.
Another wondrous shower and we trotted off to the Big Game Club Marina for a "circus" and a Bahamian dinner of conch snack (deep fried conch), fries, and local Sands beers. The circus consisted of 3 young French Canadian men who did acrobatics, juggling, and the such.
It was fun. The first half of the show was a series of physical feats by two of the men.
The second half was juggling - balls, batons, and fiery torches.
I was asked if I wanted to test the torches to see if the heat was real? noooo..... did I want to test his abs to see if they were real? yesssss....
The 20 year old athletic French Canadian must have liked it because he came back twice for more! I obliged! (and you thought this was going to be about Smokey!) It WAS fun!
To bed early, only to be awakened at 11:30 for the New Year's Eve fireworks. No, I don't know why they weren't at midnight. We did watch the ball drop in NYC and went back to bed.
We have decided to spend one more day in Bimini to ensure better sailing for the next two days. We will leave early tomorrow, motor/sail all day, and spend the night anchored on the shallow banks. The next day we will cross the Tongue of the Ocean (deep) and spend the night anchored on the west side of New Providence Island. Weather still permitting, we will scoot over to the Exumas for a next stop at Allen's Cay, home of the iguanas. That is when our island hopping will begin!
